Interesting comments. In the only Carnegie book I have read about Lincoln, Carnegie borrowed heavily from Herndon.
I am in the middle of reading "Mary Lincoln Biography of A Marriage" by Ruth Painter Randall. A very enjoyable book. She doesn't care for Herndon's view of Mary and she does a nice job of explaining why.

Gene, I was so DISGUSTED after reading that Carnegie is supposed to have written that AL's greatest tragedy wasn't the assassination but his marriage that I decided not to read his book.

The idea that AL would have considered a bullet to his brain more desirable than being allowed to remain with the family who adored him and a country that desperately needed him-is one of the most idiotic and cruel statements I have ever read about anyone!

I very much enjoyed Ruth Randall's book. She is sympathetic to MTL without resorting to exaggeration or hagiography.
