I would hope that Mr. Taylor will consult with real physician or wound dresser as that is not the type of binding that Dr. Mudd would have applied. The splint would be of the "sugar tong" variety and requires musch less window dressing than that observed in the picture posted. If accuracy in dressing is required (from the clothes it is important), I would respectfully suggest that Mr. Taylor look at the Surgical manual of the Confederate Medical Department, for how to properly applya splint. Properly applied they are not an impediment but actually serve to releive pain and provide support.
