RE: Lewis Powell's Double
We'll have to find a photo of Capt. Nichols in his youth.
Mike Kauffman writes in American Brutus that when Weichmann "learned, on the morning of the 15th, that Seward's attacker was wearing a long gray coat, he resolved to tell authorities immediately that George Atzerodt must have been that man. "Weichmann took his suspicions to police headquarters, and while there he also mentioned the large dark- haired man who had visited the Surratt boarding house. The man had used several names, but Weichmann had remembered him as 'Paine' and recalled that lately he had been staying at the Herndon House." I found Capt. Nichols in Fold3. Not much information on him other than what we already know but at least we know now that he did exist! It's a beginning. |
