You are right. This wasn't a documentry, although many people treat it like one. He took some poetic license. Like the scene in Jurasic Park, where the dinosaur eats the lawyer who is in the outhouse. It didn't really occur the way it was portayed on the screen. He probably just used a little poetic license.
