After reading the article Mike posted I was curious about all the sugar purchases, and I checked Harry Pratt's book on the Lincolns' finances/expenditures. Here is an example of one month's sugar purchases. All of these purchases were from the at C.M. & S. Smith store in Springfield during the month of January, 1859.
January 4 - purchase of 10 pounds of sugar January 13 - purchase of 6 pounds of crushed sugar January 15 - purchase of 11 pounds of sugar January 25 - purchase of 11 pounds of sugar January 31 - purchase of 6 pounds of sugar |
