RE: Things Lincoln never said
Roger,
Tarbell corresponded with LaSalle Corbell Pickett and there is only one letter in the Allegheny files, but the others are in the Smith College files. None of them mentions any specific stories from Pickett's book and it doesn't seem that Tarbell had any opinion on it. She published the letter that Lincoln wrote to Pickett (which was what their correspondence covered) in the second volume of her Life of Lincoln, but nowhere in her letters does she mention the supposed incident. I have to agree with you that it seems spurious. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell
I want the respect of intelligent men, but I will choose for myself the intelligent. --Carl Sandburg
