All horses are trained to be mounted from the left (or near) side. Some will tolerate being mounted from the right - but it's usually a rarity and the horse will usually spook if mounted from the right. Besides, it's extremely awkward. I would assume that JWB mounted from the standard left side, putting his left foot in the stirrup to mount -
