I think Powell pretended to be a laborer so that he would have a disguise when he walked through the streets of Washington on his way to Mrs. Surratt's house. Also, since he didn't have a gun or knife on him, the axe could be used as a weapon. I do believe that people can do really bad things and be genuinely sorry. And he seems to have been a nice person with a compassionate streak. The concussion thing, I'm not sure about. He had 3 days, didn't he, hiding out? I know concussion can affect you for weeks afterwards, but there's just something about this that doesn't sound right to me. It makes no sense, though it is the kind of thing you'd do if you weren't thinking straight. But he thought straight enough to hide in a tree for 3 days. Thought straight enough to disguise himself and make some headgear to wear, no matter how bizarre that must have looked. Straight enough to fabricate a story for his entry into the boarding house. I dunno. It just seems odd. ‘I’ve danced at Abraham Lincoln’s birthday bash... I’ve peaked.’ Leigh Boswell - The Open Doorway. http://earthkandi.blogspot.co.uk/ |
