I do not know if he was the first one, but the incident was reported in 1866 by Francis Carpenter in The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln: Six Months at the White House (originally published as Six Months at the White House With Abraham Lincoln). The story is on p. 289 of the Bison Books edition (which is what I have).
