It was at General Drum's post in Southern California that 31 Camels were sent to Cavalry in the Civil War.Stanton ordered the Camels disposed of and wrote it off as a bad idea in 1863.

Are you sure Herb?
I thought it was named after Lieutenant General Hugh Drum, the guy who was passed over for chief of staff by George Marshall. Before that I think it was called Fort Piney.
