RE: Location of Peyton House
I've read that Booth took ungentlemanly liberties in immediately making himself at home once inside with Sarah Jane. By this, I mean relaxing with his feet on the furniture, etc. That's when she decided that it was not proper for a woman alone in the house to entertain strangers and asked them to leave.
Mr. Hall used to tell a funny story about Miss Peyton and the census taker. I believe it is the 1860 Federal Census that lists her and gives a fairly young age for her. Beside that column, the census taker wrote in "'tain't so..." Like many others, Miss Sarah Jane evidently lied about her age - or looked a lot older than she really was. |
