Pittman's letter to Ewing is dated Aug 24th. That is a month and a half after the hangings. It seems that the engraving for the cover of the book was influenced by the verdict and not vice versa.

It is interesting that in Mudd's place is an image of John Surratt Jr. He wasn't even on trial.
