I should imagine too, with Powell's military background and year's experience with Mosby in stealth and skedaddle, he'd be more comfortable working on his own, and perhaps felt safer that way.

I agree. Also, he would have been less noticeable to people searching for him traveling on his own. Remember also that no one knew that Powell was the man responsible for the attack on Seward's house. The authorities at first believed it might have been John Surratt.
