I've read a little on line, but the articles were focused on her insanity defense from the legal point of view. As I understand it, she shot a former boy friend point blank and killed him. They had known each other for about four years. How serious their relationship is questionable, but she thought it was more serious than he did. Part of her defense was that she had major female irregularities that caused periodic mental instability. Add to that she was a jilted lover and you have a perfect recipe for murder. She supposedly had a small stack of corespondence from the man in question (love letters), but I couldn't tell if any of them were read to the jury. His family claimed no knowledge of a serious relationship between the two, as he had even married someone else (for money?). This was a sensational trial that created quite a following, even Mrs. Lincoln followed the trial in the newspapers. The all male jury was out for a very short time and gave a verdict of not guilty. An interesting ending, several years later (15-20?) she marries one of the attorneys (hers?) He was 8o, she was 40. This was one of the early trials involving the insanity defense.
