RE: Who is this person?
He was born a year before Lincoln. Like him, he did not go to college but nevertheless became an attorney.
BTW, Eva's first thought was sort of close to the mark. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Who is this person?
No, Roger. But , again, you're sort of close.
But this man was born in the US. At one point he went into competition with one of Lincoln's employers. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Who is this person?
Nope, not him. Although as with the other attempts (apart from Marx) the year of birth is correct.
The person that we're looking for ... denounced the institution of slavery, but recognized the right of the Confederate States of America to secede. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Who is this person?
Does look a bit like Darwin, Eva. But Rob is close to certain that he's got it.
And, yes! Rob is correct. I was going to struggle for more clues. Maybe mention the Secret Six. And John Brown. The 'Spartan' first name and the link to Spoonerism. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysander_Spooner "The proto-libertarian and anarchist Lysander Spooner argued that nowhere did the Constitution explicitly endorse slavery. It was for defenders of the values of 1776 and 1789 to help the slaves overthrow an illegitimate tyranny. In this he had the support of the Republican Frederick Douglass, who also wanted the United States to live up to its founding documents rather than to nullify or negate them. Meanwhile, the Democrats were unashamed advocates of the extension of slavery, and Lincoln was willing to submit to one humiliation after another in order, as he never tired of saying, "to preserve the Union." https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...ry/303915/ “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Who is this person?
Kudos, Laurie! Yes, it's Mr. Seymour. I know he's been a trivia question before, but I came across an article published today that contains his account of his time at Ford's Theatre when he was a "little shaver five years old." I thought if I did not use it as an assassination trivia question that I might challenge some folks. But you got it with no hints. Good eyes!

RE: Who is this person?
To get things moving, my first impression is Phil Sheridan, but I have never seen a photo of him not in uniform.
So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

RE: Who is this person?
Nope, not Sheridan, Gene.
Hint #1: This man never met Lincoln in person, but there is a definite connection. |
