RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
Sorry gentleman, but neither is correct.
The person is an American. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
Good job Steve. It was John Reed. Reed briefly worked with Tarbell at the American Magazine. While he grew close to Tarbell, calling her "Aunt Ida" he was much closer to Lincoln Steffens as he shared Steffens' views on Russia and Communism. My next clue was going to be that he was one of three Americans given this honor after he died, which was to be buried in the Kremlin. When you mentioned Bill Haywood (who was one of the three as well), I thought you were likely on the right track.
Somewhere in the mess I call a filing system I have a newspaper article about Tarbell and Reed. I had hoped to find it before someone answered the question. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
Obviously not the article that you're looking for, but interesting view of Reed from the UK's Left-wing Guardian ...

Thanks, Mike. It's been decades since I read Ten Days That Shook the World. Ah, college. When it was OK to lean as far left as one liked.

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
In doing some research for my latest Tarbell article, I came across the following quote:
"As usual, I am in pursuit of Lincoln novelties. I go to Boston tomorrow to hunt up a speech which I'm sure was reported in 1848 in a Boston paper and which Nicolay and Hay didn't get. You see my whole object in life now is to find something N&H didn't. Noble ambition, isn't it?" To whom was Tarbell writing?
