My Podcast Debut - Lincoln Assassination in Comics
Hello all. Just wanted to let you know that I was recently a guest on a comic book related podcast, the subject of which being one of the assassination related comics I will be speaking about at the Surratt Conference in April – so “spoiler” alert!. This format allowed me to get more in depth while examining a single story than I could possibly do in a lecture where I’m trying to give an overview of multiple stories.

The process was interesting. Ryan (the host) later (and separate from our joint recording session) records his intro and outro then edits them together with the part that he and I recorded together. I recorded this under my comic book podcasting nom de guerre “Scott X”. I should also say that I had loads of fun doing my part of the podcast!

The topic was a comic book story entitled “The Crimson Claw” and it involves JWB (I’m sort of giving the end of the story away, sorry!). I have never recorded anything in this fashion (online, not seeing each other face to face, and it being sort of organic and conversational). Other than the story synopsis I wrote and read, the poem excerpt, the gypsy fortune, and a couple of quotes (thanks Eva, John Fazio, and Roger for help on my prep on short notice!), I was pretty much just winging it and going with the flow.

Having listened to this already, I think I rambled in a few spots, would have liked to have added a couple of other thoughts or comments here and there, and was not as totally accurate historically in a couple of others as I would have liked to have been. But that is the nature of live recording I guess. The audience for this podcast was comic book readers, so with that in mind, I referred them to a couple of familiar websites knowing that they would probably find more information on the assassination story on there than they could imagine or probably even care about. But who knows, maybe someone will check them out and become a history lover!

So, for those interested, I wanted to share a link to the podcast if you want to listen - it is about 50 minutes in its entirety and I would guess my portion is about 35-38 minutes:

If you scroll to the bottom of episode 8, you will see a podcast player. Just click the play button (sideways triangle) and you can listen to the episode. If you scroll down beyond that, there is an episode 8 image gallery where you can read/view the comic story by selecting “read more” below the first page image that is displayed.

Scott, I really enjoyed listening to the podcast. You did an outstanding job. I have always enjoyed the gypsy story. When the late Art Loux was getting John Wilkes Booth: Day by Day ready for publication, I asked him if he were going to include it. He said "no," and we went back and forth on it. I do not know if Art considered it apocryphal, but when the book came out the story was not included. I guess I couldn't convince him to include it. Nevertheless it remains a story I enjoy, and I sure enjoyed hearing you discuss it in the podcast.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Scott, I really enjoyed your podcast. You were very relaxed and knowledgeable. We all know that your knowledge about Lincoln's assassination is spot on but your comic book chops showed well too. I recently bid on a Flash #210. Great job again..

I, too really enjoyed the Podcast, Scott! Great presentation - and yes, as an artist, I also enjoy comics about the assassination and the 19th Century. I, too as a kid had a huge comics collection and some of the "scary" ones, too....
