Out of the Mouths of Babes
Here's a question for Betty O: We had a regional group of home schoolers visit the Surratt House today, and as usual, we divided them according to ages. One young man (about 12) had read Killing Lincoln by Bill O'Reilly, which required our guide (Lindsey Horn of this forum) to correct some "misconceptions."
However, the young man was intrigued with Lewis Powell and wanted to know lots more about him -- including "How come he ended up so handsome when he got kicked in the jaw by a horse when he was young?" Try to come up with an answer to that one... Another younger boy exclaimed at the end of the tour that "...this is the best day yet!" Mom had just given in and purchased a toy in the gift shop for him! I asked if today was better than Christmas. He informed me that no day is better than Christmas. I hope he meant that in the true meaning of the season, but somehow I doubt it. |

A person asked a similar question last Saturday at Fort McNair - I told the lady that there was more or less but one answer.... GENES! Powell's parents were both very handsome folk.... and beautiful people (usually!) make beautiful children..... Apparently his broken jaw healed well - aside from his bad teeth; a result of chewing tobacco and general lack of dental hygiene in the Victorian era. Great to see young people becoming engaged in history. While the O'Reilly book has its flaws, it serves a great purpose of engaging people into the history. It leads to questions that can show that the facts of the assassination, in many cases, stranger than the fiction. Example.....JWB lying on the bed AL would die in.

RE: Out of the Mouths of Babes
I was at a birthday party for a little 5 year old miscreant princess. There were presents flung at her, all of her friends there, magician show, clowns, pony rides, an afternoon of dropping innumerable quarters at those kiddie casino gamerooms and finally dinner at a nice restaurant where at least we of countless multiples of her age could enjoy an adult beverage. She wanted a chocolate shake. Informed that they had run out of chocolate shakes, she burst into tears and screamed, "This has been the worst day of my life!"

That is very true Betty O...the Powells were easy on the eyes for sure. LOL!! What a precocious 12 year old, to come up with a question like that! But the kid had a point.... |
