Talk on Booth and the Garretts at Port Royal, VA
Our own Dave Taylor will give a talk in Port Royal, VA on Tuesday, April 22 at 7 PM -
Historic Port Royal hosts talk on John Wilkes Booth Historic Port Royal member David Taylor will be the group’s guest speaker 7 p.m. April 22. Taylor will give a talk about John Wilkes Booth and the Garrett family. Booth sought refuge in Port Royal after he shot President Abraham Lincoln. He was killed two miles outside the town, west of the intersection of present day Routes 301 and 17. The Garrett family farm is where Booth hid and then died. Taylor’s talk will be during the meeting, which will take place at Town Hall, at 419 King St. http://news.fredericksburg.com/carolinec...kes-booth/ "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. Is the meeting in Port Royal or Fredericksburg? I don't remember seeing a Town Hall in what remains of Port Royal.

RE: Talk on Booth and the Garretts at Port Royal, VA
I went searching and there really is a Town Hall. It is farther south than what we usually view in the historic area. Check out this link for some nice photos and history on Port Royal. Make sure you also go to the Preservation Virginia link on that page. Watch for the photos showing the Brockenborough House. We assassination nuts know it better as the Peyton House where Miss Sarah Jane Peyton thought better of inviting Mr. Booth into her home and recommended that they call upon Mr. Garrett.

Regarding the picture of the river, I walked down that road (today closed as they are building a new pier) and walked out on a technically closed pier under construction at the foot of the street on April 15th. A permit posted on a telephone pole indicates it was issued in early March 2015. I assume they will be done by April 26th? |
