Surratt Conference Makes A Special Award
For those of you who were unable to attend the Surratt Conference this week, I want to fill you in on a special award to a special person. The Surratt Society membership now numbers in the 1600s. There are four various categories of membership: Volunteers, General, Life, and Honorary.

The latter category is the smallest because few people have earned the level of service to both the Society and the Lincoln assassination field to be awarded the honor. In its forty years, the Society has only honored less than ten people.

At this conference, however, we added another name to the list when we announced that MR. ROGER J. NORTON has been named an Honorary Member for his all-around service to the Society and the Lincoln history field in general through his Abraham Lincoln Research Site, which has assisted students and scholars for nearly twenty years (and was the first internet site of that type to be acknowledged by placement on the Library of Congress' Resource Center), and of course, for this wonderful forum dedicated to Lincoln studies.

Roger could not be present at Saturday night's banquet to receive his award in person, but we were able to get him on the phone for the presentation. Congratulations to our friend and teacher!

RE: Surratt Conference Makes A Special Award
Laurie, thank you and the Surratt Society very much. I am honored and humbled. Joe was able to get his phone close enough to Louise so I was able to hear part of what she said. I was so surprised and got a little emotional on the phone with Joe. I am really speechless, and when I feel great gratitude I am not gifted with the ability to really put it into words. So simply saying “thank you” is the best I can do. I have received many emails about the conference, and it's obvious that it was a resounding success. All of the incredible time and effort you put into it should make you feel proud. Kudos to you, Laurie!

Congratulations, Roger. Like I told you, the efforts you've made over the years to help school kids with their projects alone qualifies you for this. You truly deserve to be part of such an honored group. I'm glad your work has been acknowledged and that you know your peers hold you in such high esteem.

Roger,

Congratulations on this much-deserved honor. The Abraham Research Site is still one of the best-roganized and informative Lincoln sites out there.

Roger. If Abraham Lincoln were living today, I am sure he would want to shake your hand in acknowledgment as that of a great friend and supporter, and also of someone who well deserves this award.
