The map is taken from the 2000 Census. "By far the largest ancestral group, stretching from coast to coast, is German, with 49,206,934 people. The peak immigration for Germans was in the mid-19th century as thousands were driven from their homes by unemployment and unrest."

The map would look quite different now, based on the 2010 census. There are many, many more Latinos in the U.S. now even than there were in 2000.

My grandparents were all born in Italy. It's interesting to see that Italians for the most part have stayed in the tri-state area close to Ellis Island.
