A Way to Get to the Surratt House Website - scldrgnfly - 05-31-2013 12:40 AM I founds this Education Outreach Web Page for The Surratt House Museum and if you go to the bottom and hit the "Homepage" Link it will take you to the website: http://207.57.87.108/education/museum-outreach.html RE: A Way to Get to the Surratt House Website - RJNorton - 05-31-2013 04:25 AM Many thanks, Martha! However, I still see a problem here. Most folks go to websites through searches on Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. Google is listing the Surratt site just as it did before, and that domain is still not functional. Betty and I had a bad experience with AOL in 2008. We both had our websites on AOL, and then suddenly that company stopped hosting websites. They also did not allow webmasters to upload redirect files which would have redirected users to a new URL. Our websites disappeared along with millions of other AOL websites. I remember how upset Betty and I were at that time. Betty had a wonderful, attractive, educational website entitied "News Reports Of The Lincoln Assassination." I think Betty just gave up on her site, but I changed mine over to a totally different domain. But Google and the other search engines took a long time to recognize what happened. Basically what I am saying is, when it comes to search engine placement, I sure hope the redesigned Surratt site will quickly be back up on the same URLs it now has in the search engines! Sometimes search engines don't understand these "gaps" while a newly designed site is being prepared. RE: A Way to Get to the Surratt House Website - scldrgnfly - 06-01-2013 06:42 PM I HATE to say this, but I am as worried as you are about this turn of events. It is almost as if someone has taken over the domain name, which I am hoping as you that that is not the case. As I said, even clicking on our old familiar picture of the museum on Wikipedia even directed me to the bogus website. RE: A Way to Get to the Surratt House Website - L Verge - 06-01-2013 09:42 PM We are being assured that the domain name is safe and that it can remain "unused" for 4-5 months before anyone else can buy it. There is a very tangled story behind this based on the member who volunteered to create our new site having to transfer it to a server that is compatible with his system or something. That new company is requiring loads of "identification" from us. I don't understand computer worlds, so I am flying blind on this. RE: A Way to Get to the Surratt House Website - RJNorton - 06-02-2013 04:39 AM I agree with Martha. I am not getting the normal 404 (page not found error) that I would expect to get. I have done two makeovers on my own site since 1996, and each time I left the old pages on the server before uploading the redesigned ones. Something different is happening here with the Surratt site. Not sure what it is. If Google's spider cannot find the pages eventually they will be dropped entirely from Google's search results. |
