Civil War Richmond - BettyO - 04-17-2013 06:23 PM

David George (Sobbing of the Strong) came down to Richmond today and I gave him the "Grand Tour" -

First stop - the White House of the Confederacy - then on to Tredegar Iron Works which was the major foundry for the Confederate government and continued to produce beautiful "wrought iron lace" railings and ironwork for many of Richmond's houses post war. The bright spot for me was to go down to what was the Florida Hospital during the war. Lew Powell was here from June 30, 1862 to October 31, 1862 for an unspecified illness. It is being renovated and we were able to go inside. I had been inside years ago, but didn't have a camera with me....today I did. Here you can see the original posts, beams and brickwork of the tobacco warehouse converted hospital.

David posed with the beautiful Lincoln statue at Tredegar....

That statue of President Lincoln and his son is fantastic. Great photo.

I am seriously considering trying to see if we can do a Civil War Richmond tour as part of the 2014 Surratt conference. It is about a 2 1/2-hour drive south from Clinton, which means leaving early and getting back late in order to see the most important sites. Maybe Sunday???
