Surratt JWB tour suggestions - Rhatkinson - 04-17-2013 06:04 PM I am attending the tour this Saturday and cannot wait for it. My brother and I are coming to DC tomorrow night and plan to spend Friday touring DC. I would love to hear suggestions of places we could go Lincoln related that are not on the tour. The great Dave Taylor was kind enough to recommend several places to me (e.g., Baptist Alley [not included on the tour], the Ford's Theatre for Leadership, and the Seward House site), but I would appreciate any other suggestions the board members may have. Thanks, Heath RE: Surratt JWB tour suggestions - Jim Garrett - 04-17-2013 06:19 PM The Wok N Roll at 604 H St. NW is the Surratt boarding house. It's 6 blocks from Ford's. If you go to Lafayette Square, Henry Rathbone's home is almost directly across from the site of the Seward House, aka the Roger's House, aka the Old Club. Also on Lafayette Square is the Decatur House. The Decatur House is a museum, but just prior to the outbreak of hostilities, ot was the home of Sen. Judah P. Benjamin. Benjamin held numerous positions in the Confederate government. Heath, have you gotten tickets for Ford's yet? This is prime tourist season. You want tickets on the hour, not half hour. There is also the memorable DTSPT! RE: Surratt JWB tour suggestions - Rhatkinson - 04-17-2013 06:53 PM Thanks, Jim. I was told that Ford's is part of the tour. Is that not right? RE: Surratt JWB tour suggestions - BettyO - 04-17-2013 06:59 PM Heath - Send me an PM and I'll see if I can get you into the Restored Trial Room at Fort McNair (Old Arsenal) if you wish - RE: Surratt JWB tour suggestions - L Verge - 04-17-2013 07:12 PM Yes, the theater and the Petersen House are included in our tour, but the new Education and Leadership Center next to Petersen's is not. Definitely try to get in there on Friday. Try to do McNair also with Betty's help. Also go to Willard's hotel and stroll through the lobby and Peacock Alley. It'll take you five minutes, but it's great. RE: Surratt JWB tour suggestions - Sally - 04-17-2013 08:08 PM I have no particular suggestions about area sites, but I was on the tour last year, and it was FANTASTIC! You'll love it. Have fun! RE: Surratt JWB tour suggestions - Matt Macoubrie - 04-18-2013 12:10 AM I would suggest Soldier's Home, its only three miles north of the Capital, and would be totally worth it, here is the link to the website: http://lincolncottage.org/ RE: Surratt JWB tour suggestions - Jim Garrett - 04-18-2013 05:05 AM [quote='L Verge' pid='16543' dateline='1366243967'] Yes, the theater and the Petersen House are included in our tour, but the new Education and Leadership Center next to Petersen's is not. If you do the theatre, museum(s) and the Petersen house on Friday, you will not feel like you are overlapping much. |
