The Old Store - RJNorton - 04-16-2013 11:10 AM

Bob Cook sent this information:

"The Lincoln assassination/JWB escape route-associated home across the street from the Bryantown Tavern here is on the market again.

The home actually is named "The Old Store" and, like the Bryantown Tavern, is on the U.S. Department of the Interior National Register of Historic Places - it was to this (then a store) building that Dr. Samual A. Mudd traveled to "run errands" on the morning of April 15, 1865 and learned that President Lincoln had been assassinated but then proceeded to say nothing or notify the military personnel who were across the road at the house here about the “strangers’ who were at his house four miles north of Bryantown. Later that morning same morning, JWB and DEH (heading south again) crossed directly behind the house on the hill (named: Evergreen) that is imaged from the first-floor rear porch of The Old Store in the third photograph of the series below.

It is directly in front of The Old Store that the buses currently stop during the modern-day JWB escape route tours.

As the photograph series indicates, the home has been (very recently) completely modernized."
