John Surratt Jr. got married in 1872. Who did he marry? And to which famous person was she related to?

His wife, Mary Hunter, was related to Francis Scott Key--so, F. Scott Fitzgerald was related to Mary Hunter!

Joe, my gosh, you nailed it right out of the box-great job!

Hmmmm - she's also then related to Philip Barton Key; son of Francis Scott Key who was shot to death outside the Old Club House; Seward's residence, by Daniel Sickles in 1858. Key had been "philandering" with Sickles' beautiful young wife, Teresa.

Gets stranger and stranger, doesn't it?

In the final stages of the war, the push to get it over was strong. Sherman's March to the Sea burned buildings, crops and lots of infrastructure. "Sherman's Neckties" were rails pried from the RR, heated and tied around trees. The Yankees were relentless. But stealing kid's toys? Could even the Yankees be that low? What little girl bemoaned, "The Yankees stole my doll"?

Laurie Verge?

You're incorrect, Gene and I strongly suspect that your answer will get you a spot on the blackboard cleaning detail today.

Hint # 1 - The little girl's first name was Lula.

Lula Verge?

Best
Rob

Hint # 2 - Her father's first name was Wilmer.

Actually, Gene gets an A for his answer. I still accuse "Those Yankees of stealing" EVERYTHING! Just kidding, just kidding.....

We posted at the same time, Rob, so I just caught that. You'd better keep an eye peeled for flying erasers today.

Hint # 3 - They lived in a town called Appomattox Court House in Virginia. (Hurry up. I have to get going soon!)

Lula McLean - and there's a story about that doll somewhere, I just can't remember where.

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels - J. Beckert - 02-01-2013 12:16 PM

That's it, Laurie! Dubbed "The Silent Witness" by the young officers who tossed it around on the porch (RTL included), Lula's doll was kept as a memento by Capt. Moore of Gen. Sheridan's staff. Here's the story.

You've won two free admission passes to Fred Smith's Wisconsin Concrete Park. Enjoy yourself and say howdy to Fred for us.

We might as well make this Lincoln Discussion Symposium Parenting Tip # 1, also - Tell the young'uns if they don't put their toys away, the Yankees will come back down there again and steal them.
