Research on Angel's Glow? - LoveOfArchives - 04-13-2023 05:02 PM

Hi friends,
I wondered if anyone out there, especially the doctors among you, are familiar with any contemporary research into the phenomenon referred to as Angel's Glow that happened at the Battle of Shiloh.

The story of Angel's Glow is associated with the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War where soldiers' wounds would glow and these glowing wounds would heal faster. In 2001, students at a science fair showed that this phenomenon could have happened using Photorhabdus luminescens. After much searching, I could not find any record of Angel's Glow before 2001, so the story is unverified.

I did check the Surratt Courier index and was surprised to see this was never the topic of an article over its entire history.

Thank you for your wonderful insights,
Colleen Puterbaugh

I've recently read Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862 by O Edward Cunningham.
I couldn't find anything about Angels Glow in the book.

Colleen, your post got me interested in this. There are a few interesting articles on the internet about this.

Great post!
I can't wait to ask some of my medical friends about this. Angel They'll think I'm smart or somethin'

I'll bet that is where I heard about this before, as I have been a lifelong Guideposts subscriber. I'm surprised on the dearth of sources on this one. I've reached out to my neighbor who was previously the director at the Civil War Medicine Museum in Frederick to see if he is familiar with it (He works at the museum at the Navy Yard now). If I find out any info, I'll come back here to post for everyone's edification.
