I believe that I have mentioned on this forum (as well as in the Surratt Courier) that I had a great-great uncle who was a Confederate prisoner at Point Lookout in Southern Maryland. After I carried his story in the Courier, I received a letter from a couple who have been members of the Surratt Society for a number of years. They informed me that my great-great uncle, George Beasten, was her great-great-great grandfather.

They also informed me that George married an Eastern Shore of Maryland girl by the name of Hill, daughter of Dr. James H. Hill, who was murdered in 1892, and the case became a hot news item related to racism issues. There's a book about it.

In the process of helping a gentleman from Ireland today who is tracing his lineage to Dr. William Tonry, husband to Mary Surratt's daughter Anna, I discovered that Tonry was called in to assist in the investigation because he was one of the leading forensic analysts in the U.S. and based in Baltimore. Talk about degrees of separation!
