Very cool Joe! CNN says it was found in the estate of a civil war general. I then came across this; Stanton gave the note to chief telegrapher Thomas Eckert who gave it to Major General John Dix to dessimimate the news. So maybe it was found in the Dix estate.

I read some of the top portion of the telegraph and it does appear that it was meant for General Dix so you are probably right.

I do not know Thomas Eckert's handwriting, but I have studied Stanton's and this is not in Stanton's handwriting. The article does say that Stanon "dictated" the telegram to Eckert. Before I spent $500,000 on it, I would want to have it authenticated that is it is Eckert's handwriting. Thanks for posting, Joe!
