It can be easy to forget just how different our different our world is, and how people experienced it, from a century and a half ago. And I'm not just talking about technology and societal mores, but the whole natural world around us. I have a link to a wonderful (12 min.) video about the passenger pigeon and how its extinction changed the composition of forests and even the color of fall leaves:

A few years back, I remember an article on how the near extinction of wolves in some national park had seriously affected the environment.
