Newton Strong and Matilda Edwards - Susan Higginbotham - 06-19-2018 10:25 PM This 1952 article in Pennsylvania History tells the story of Newton Strong and his bride Matilda Edwards, claimed by some to have been a rival with Mary Todd for Lincoln's affections. https://journals.psu.edu/phj/article/view/22207 RE: Newton Strong and Matilda Edwards - RJNorton - 06-20-2018 04:19 AM That is a wonderful article, Susan. Thanks for posting. When I think of Matilda Edwards I tend to think of what numerous authors have written...that a high percentage of Springfield's young men were seeking her hand in marriage. I once read she turned down 18 marriage proposals. The article mentions that William E. Barton described her as "tall, willowy and a blond." That is the first time I think I have ever read such a description of her. Does anyone know Barton's source for this? |
