Many thanks to Steve for sending these articles. Steve writes, "I found something interesting when looking into the Pilgrim correspondent for the Philadelphia Times who was listed as the author of several interview articles over the 1880's. The 24 June 1883 issue of the Times call's Pilgrim's articles "interviews" (with the quote marks used), which may imply they weren't intended to be taken as actual interviews by the original long-time readers of the Times. Of course, if true, this would definitely mean that the 1885 wasn't really an interview with Surratt. I'm not sure I get the parody of the Pilgrim articles if that was intended, but I can't think of any other reason quote marks would be around the word interviews. I've included the note by the Times about Pilgrim to post to the forum. I've also included the James Payn interview by Pilgrim from that issue of the Times."
