RE: Bottoms Up - Gene C - 02-20-2016 06:48 PM Interesting since Lincoln is known for abstaining from alcoholic beverages, RE: Bottoms Up - L Verge - 02-20-2016 08:39 PM I want to know what makes the Emancipation Punch No. 7 so expensive. $49?? The ceiling lights at the restaurant are made from Mason Jars, and there are Lincoln pennies worked into the floor. Speaking of Lincoln pennies, I cleaned out a closet today and found a large (8" dia), clear glass, Lincoln penny paperweight that I had forgotten I had. I think I may have bought it in a shop at one of the glass companies in Ohio back in the 1970s. RE: Bottoms Up - HerbS - 02-21-2016 06:45 PM I will try anything but the-kool aid! Laurie, I hope you get a chance to eat there sometime. Tom and I met Scott Schroeder and his family there for dinner one night; the food was really good. And Tom ate there with Eva when they explored D.C. The best part was wandering to find how many different ways they incorporated Lincoln into the decor. The Emancipation Punch serves 4-6 people, which makes the price a bit more reasonable (by comparison to their other drinks). We didn't try it. Maybe next time! Gail Carr (& Tom Bogar) RE: Bottoms Up - DanielC - 02-22-2016 08:52 PM Last summer I visited Amorini Panini near Ford's Theatre. Delicious! RE: Bottoms Up - Angela - 02-23-2016 12:17 AM I absolutely love this place! We found it by chance a few years ago and have returned a few times now. Not just the cocktails but also the food is very good! The people are simply amazing - I totally suggest to inquire about the shirts; that'll unlock a few extra surprises. A friend of mind took some pictures last year: RE: Bottoms Up - Eva Elisabeth - 02-23-2016 07:57 AM Angela, re.: "I totally suggest to inquire about the shirts; that'll unlock a few extra surprises." Would you share? They have much more than what you can see at first glance. In anticipation of the coming election, I got this shirt: RE: Bottoms Up - LincolnMan - 02-24-2016 06:37 AM My sons tease me that Lincoln owned a brewery. They do this because they know Lincoln didn't drink. Or maybe they just want to drive me to drink! RE: Bottoms Up - Miss_Bellatrix - 04-05-2016 11:08 AM Added this to my list of places I need to go when I'm in DC again. Sounds awesome! I'm normally a wine drinker so I'd be curious to see their wine list. I do, however, love bourbon. Of course Knob Creek is my favourite type...so I'd probably give one of those drinks with the bourbon a try. I'm going to ask about the shirts. I need more Lincoln shirts RE: Bottoms Up - Eva Elisabeth - 04-07-2016 06:38 AM (02-20-2016 06:48 PM)Gene C Wrote: Interesting since Lincoln is known for abstaining from alcoholic beverages,Yes, and while I would instantly understand a fruit juice creation or a newly cultivated kind of apple being named after Abraham Lincoln I just don't get why to name an alcoholic drink after him. I have long considered whether to comment on this or not, but finally cannot hold back. Please understand that I neither mind nor mean to criticize anyone who however frequent enjoys whatever kind and amount of alcohol. I don't know about the US, but in this country you very often have a hard time socializing when you don't join drinking alcohol - first of all beer...but also such as cocktails. Sadly the more the younger you are - a grade 10-13 or university student who doesn't join and brag off about weekend drinking sprees and it's side effects easily ends up the odd one out. Thus I have always appreciated Abraham Lincoln's firmness on the matter, as the following incident illustrates (and apologize for repetition as I have posted it before): When hearing that Lincoln only served "Adam's ale" (cold water) to the committee (headed by George Ashmun, on May 19, 1860) notifying him of his nomination as presidential candidate of the Republican Party, a journalist and temperance advocate inquired of Lincoln's temperance sentiments. In a letter, Lincoln stated: "Having kept house sixteen years, and having never held the 'cup' to the lips of my friends then, my judgment was that I should not, in my new position, change my habit in this respect." At all, alcohol is a very sensitive topic, and one must be very sure the honor is appreciated instead of hurting feelings when linking someone likewise to it. I would feel totally misrepresented by a drink bearing my name and not honored, and IMO such doesn't represent nor honor Abraham Lincoln either whom I find a role model as for one can succeed without bowing to the social pressure. The only benefit I can see is on the selling side, and I find this an inappropriate abuse of his name. (However, I know he would have been more tolerant than I and have said: "I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice...I am used to it.") Here are the song reminder and English lyrics: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=skp1Uf9LdPk http://www.letzte-version.de/songbuch/whats-all-this-(englisch)/alcohol/ PS: Mary did "enjoy" drinking, so I am fine with the First Lady Lincoln one even though I am not knowledgeable enough on the ingredients to understand the specific idea/symbol behind the composition - maybe someone can educate me on Germain elderflower liqueur, LaMarca prosecco, braeburn apple shrub, and BarKeep apple bitters? And what is Knob Creek bourbon? Thanks! (PPS: If you want to honor me foodwise, please by a coffee or something fruity....or yoghurt or chocolate...) RE: Bottoms Up - Gene C - 04-07-2016 07:05 AM I agree. Coffee and chocolate, two of the basic food groups RE: Bottoms Up - Eva Elisabeth - 04-07-2016 07:18 AM (04-07-2016 07:05 AM)Gene C Wrote: I agree. Thanks, Gene, I am glad I'm not the only one who thinks so (hopefully regarding the entire post)! BTW, Beethoven drank 60 cups of coffee per day! RE: Bottoms Up - HerbS - 04-07-2016 08:53 AM I used to drink alcohol, but, after losing 98lbs by not drinking alcohol, eating Asian food, exercise, will power, etc.I feel much healthier, and hopefully I will live longer! Just give me"Lincoln's-Adam's Ale" with ice to drink and I will be happy! My doctor feels one cup of coffee per day is enough for me! |
