Am I Missing Something? - L Verge - 08-26-2012 10:16 AM

In flipping through O'Reilly's new children's book on the assassination, I ran across a statement that I never remember seeing before. He discusses Booth's flight out of the back door at Ford's, hopping on the horse, AND THEN heading up the alley to TENTH STREET, where he is stopped by an impromptu torchlight parade of revelers. He then wheels around and heads up the alley to F Street.

To my knowledge, the alley to F Street was the only outlet from Baptist Alley behind the theater. I have never heard mention of an egress to Tenth Street or of a torchlight parade (at 10:30 pm?!) impeding Booth's escape. Have I missed something big all along? What is O'Reilly's source for this? As usual, no footnotes or endnotes...

Never heard of that either, Laurie! That's a new one on me!

I think at one point, the alley may have also had an exit on to E St., but to the best of my knowledge, there was not a 10th St. exit ever. I also think that would have been the last direction JWB would have gone in. I believe there was a torchlight parade going up Pennsylvania Ave, but if I am correct, that was much earlier in the evening, about the time the Lincolns were heading to the theatre. I think in this new version, they are getting their information from the same source as when they mentioned Lincoln and Grant in the oval office.

It's intresting that a "reporter" who likes to make a big deal out of politicians not getting their facts straight, can't even get his own facts straight.

I have never heard of this. It sounds like he might have got his facts crossed!
