The nighttime view of the Lincoln home draped in mourning with a full moon in the back is haunting and beautiful!

Angela just sent these photos from today's re-enactment of the funeral procession in Springfield. Thank you, Angela!

Impressive crowds, just like in Washington a couple of weeks ago!Wink

Yes, the crowds were unbelievable! Unfortunately, some of the reenactors behaved very rudely which put a bit of a dent to the whole thing and I was glad that Scott did only hear about it afterwards since he suggested a good talk down.
But we settled on the conclusion that those people were probably given some false info to begin with which might explain their very inappropriate behavior.
But apart from the incident at the train station, the mood, all day long, was one of kindness and just sheer Lincoln love.
All day long, complete strangers just stopped whatever they were doing to talk to each other. It was unbelievable to be a part of such feeling of unity and I feel utterly grateful as the day concludes.

It feels like 1865 all over again when I look at these pics.

Many thanks to Carolyn Quinlan for sending these photos. Carolyn was the music teacher in the school in which I also taught.

Thanks for sharing, Roger! These eight fluffy mummy-shaped items on the hearse, do they have a special traditional (Victorian?) meaning/background? The hearse looks really like a royal vehicle!

Eva, I think they are made out of ostrich feathers. On another web page it says, "Embedded in the fires-of-life pillars, which will be topped with ostrich feathers, are black cabochons made at Blue Ox from slabs of Brazilian onyx."

On another web page it talks about Victorian funerals and says, "Elaborate hearses were constructed, replete with black horses, ostrich feathers and flowers."

Thank you, Roger! I have another question to those of you who attended the funeral - was "Old Bob" "reinacted", too? (I miss him in the photos!)
