Lincoln's sarcophagus - loetar44 - 02-14-2015 05:48 AM

I wonder what is depicted here. Does someone know?

Looks like the original white marble sarcophagus.... I always thought that it was destroyed by souvenir hunters ....

Thanks!

I do not know, Kees. I have not seen those images before.

This page has a photo of what is referred to as a piece of the original sarcophagus.

Roger-amazing, thanks!

What a shame that it was destroyed!

Just read in the Illinois State Journal dated 17-8-1930: “All that remains of it today is the top, the bases for the ends and some broken fragments of the sides”. The sarcophagus was destroyed half July 1930, cause there is a known photo of the sarcophages outside (on the lawn) of the tomb, with custodian Herbert Fay standing beside it. This photo was taken on July 5, 1930.

I wonder, what is the “Skylight of the Sarcophagus”? Is a skylight not for “natural light”, I mean “natural light comes from a skylight”. I can image that there were skylights in the catacomb, the burial room. Is here ment that the skylight in the burial room spread natural light over the sarcophagus?
