An interesting site about the Civil War Laundress. It must have been back breaking work. I wonder how many soldiers actually paid to keep clean.

From the diaries I read,$$$ was scarce for the troops.My great-grandfather was a POW in Texas,and survived,he stated,"you died in the clothes you came in with"! More soldiers died of filth and disease,than of gunshots in the civil war.
