British Involvement in Lincoln Assassination?! - BettyO - 06-10-2014 02:09 PM

Don't know how reliable this is at all - but it sure sounds interesting!

"A total of 72 pages of documentation concerning British secret operations during the American Civil War were recently discovered in the Royal family’s pivate library by an independant journalist and author, Timothy Blainy. The 41-year old American man was working on a book on 19th century espionnage with the permission of the Crown when he made the astonishing discovery. All documents have been submitted to authentification by three different teams of experts, all of which have come to the the conclusion that the documents were legitimate, confirming the authenticity of the paper, the ink, the calligraphy and the official seals.

"According to these records, an agent of Queen Victoria named Sir James McElroy, would haved received in january 1864, the sum of 500£, an incredible amount at the time, that was to be used to recruit local collaborators and criminals in America, in order to kidnap or kill the President of the Union. The British Lord would have traveled to Canada and then to the southern capital of Richmond, where he would have established contact with the head the Confederate secrest services, James Dunwoody Bulloch. With the help of Mr. Bulloch, Sir McElroy would have been introduced to a secret society known as the “Knights of the Golden Circle”. From the members of this pro-secessionionist organization, he recruited three men known for their profound anti abolitionist sympathy, namely: Samuel Arnold, Michael O’Laughlen and James Wilkes Booth. These men would then have helped the British agent establish a vast network of spies and saboteurs throughout the United States.

"The group first conspired to kidnap Lincoln in order to exchange him for 10 000 confederate war prisonners, but that plan did not get approbation from London and was not executed. They then revised their plan and decided instead to kill the President of the Union, Abraham Lincoln, as well as Vice President Andrew Jackson and Secretary of State William H. Seward. This new plan got the approval from London who sent another 200£ to help in the accomplishment of the task. The plan was not executed as planned, as the attack on Secretary Seward failed and the man assigned to attack the Vice President finally abandoned the project and threw away his weapon. Only President Lincoln was killed, while he was watching the play Our American Cousin with his wife, at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.

"Many scholars point out the fact that many of the conspirators involved in the plot have later been arrested and juged for their implications, getting sentences going from “death by hanging” to “life in prison”, but none of them seems to have revealed their connection to the British government during their interrogations. It is however plausible to believe that the American government did obtain the information at the time, but might have decided to cover up that part of the story to avoid going to war with England at a time when their country was completely exhausted."

Anyone know anything about this? First I've heard....

McElroy and Bulloch are familiar names (and of course the KGC), but this is new info to me. I hope David Keehn and Wild Bill are reading.

Gen.Tidwell-Book"Confederate Covert Actions",does elude to that there were many people in England that would support "The Confederacy"and love to see America divided.Who Knows?-Herb

McElroy sounds familiar to me as well, Laurie. Don't know about the others - but it's all very interesting -

Yes, this is all very interesting, Betty. Like yourself, this is the first I have heard of this. This did remind me of something I read some time back about Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and its involvement with Europe-I looked again and here is what I found: "The Emancipation Proclamation outraged white Southerns who envisioned a race war, angered some Northern Democrats, energized anti-slavery forces, and undermined forces in Europe that wanted to intervene to help the Confederacy." Not sure if everyone has heard this already; it was new to me months back when I first found it, so I thought I would share it since Betty's post reminded me of it. I really enjoyed your post, Betty!

Interesting, but I'm highly skeptical.
Now if he had found the missing journal of Judah Benjamin......

RE: British Involvement in Lincoln Assassination?! - L Verge - 06-10-2014 06:23 PM

For some reason, I keep thinking that I have seen Bulloch mentioned in tandem with Benjamin. Too busy at work right now to pursue it, however. Someone else please lead the search for more information.

It was Benjamin who recognized Bulloch's (Pres. Teddy Roosevelt's uncle) offer to serve the Confederacy and sent him to England where he set up operations and conducted business that we've all seen links to.

That's all I know about it and as has been said before, the Confederate secret line left few clues. Hopefully Bill Richter will know more and will chime in here.

OK - so this is something like the National Enquirer or the now defunct Weekly World News -

Sounded too good to be true - and yes, when it named (of all the conspirators!) Sam Arnold and Mike O'Laughlen, I thought something smelled somewhat fishy..... a seemingly false alarm - although it is thought provoking....

Sorry....I just couldn't resist a bit of levity here!

When you do a Google search on Urban Legends and various news sources, the World News Daily Report is described as:

"Noteworthy for such preposterous headlines as "Dead Cow Brought Back to Life by Lightning" and "Kentucky Man Sentenced to 235,451 Years in Jail," this tabloid-style site emphasizes the "faux" in faux journalism."

There is a John McElroy who wrote on Abraham Lincoln, as well as, his time at Andersonville. He was born 1846 and died 1929. His writing on Abraham Lincoln was serialized in the Nationa; Tribune and a book (pamphlet) was published from those writings in 1910 called, "Soul Growth of Abraham Lincoln" and is available on archive.org at link.

I saw a portion of an article sequence written by John McElroy in the National Tribune of 6 Jan 1910 (on Newspapers.com) starting on page 1 and continued on page 6. It claims to be Chapter L and it alone is more than what is in the pamphlet, so it must be another serialization which discusses the capture of Booth and Herold with discussion on the capture of John Surratt.

Background on John McElroy: Sent to Andersonville. Appears to be high up in the Grand Army of the Republic. Served on committees with O. H. Oldroyd. A book on the "Proceedings of the ... Annual Encampment ..." can be looked through at Google Books at link.

I kind of doubt it Herb.
If they were after Andrew Jackson too, they were a little bit late.
