Here's another view I've never seen - a street level view of Ford's right after the assassination.

That building must have been impressive for 1870. I wonder what it looked like when it was a church?

Bill, the Ford's Theatre Society website has an image here.

Nice web site. So there it is! I can't say it looked attractive as a church- but what do I know? That may have been the style but then. Ironic that Lincoln was shot in a building that was a former church- and that some scolded him for being in a theater on Good Friday when he "should" have been in church.

I don't find it that bad. At least it did look like a church - unlike this: http://rogerjnorton.com/LincolnDiscussionSymposium/thread-695-post-20209.html#pid20209 .

Just curious...Does anyone know what was on that location before the building was built? Washington was a fairly new city at that time so I imagine there is not much of a history as far as buildings go.

Craig, if I am reading the new Ford's Theatre Society book correctly it was simply a vacant lot prior to the church being built in 1833-1834.

Thanks for posting this Joe. The Ghosts of DC web site is very interesting.

No problem, Gene. I posted on the forum I found the street level shot of Ford's on, asking the man who posted them where he found them, but I haven't gotten a response. Is anyone here a member of CivilWarTalk.com?
