This explains what may have happened.

This is a better link.

What happened to Christopher McCandless is still being debated. There are several websites that try to offer other explanations to what happened to him.

However, just points out, a well ballenced diet, including fats and sugars, are important to healthy life style. I just can't get the balence quite right.
I think coffee and chocolate shoul be added to the basic food groups. (Since coffee comes from beans, can I consider it a vegatable?)

I would love to turn these stereo views into an animated 3D image, like I did in this thread:

http://rogerjnorton.com/LincolnDiscussionSymposium/thread-1419-post-28799.html#pid28799

But, I have to correct the images for perspective because the photo was taken at an angle. Getting the 3D effect to work well takes time. Does anyone have a flatbed scan of these stereo types (or any similar)? When they are scanned on a flatbed scanner, I don't have to correct the perspective and they are *much* easier to do.

Crowza,

Here are two Stereoviews of the execution available from the Library of Congress. I'd love to see the 3D images you could make with them:

http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2008680151/

Also, I swear the LOC just put up the first image recently. It's the same shot that shows Powell's face. I'm glad to see a slightly high res image of it available, now.

Thanks for the links, Dave!

Here is my first rough draft of the hanging. As such, I tried to focus my efforts on the people standing on the platform. I'll update this with a better version in the future as time allows. Just remember to sit/lean back from your computer's monitor and relax your eyes to take in the whole photo.

A few things stand out to me that I never noticed before. The man standing on the middle beam, has his foot practically hanging off the platform. He might be using the middle beam for support. It seems rather unusual, almost as he either got surprised when the traps opened, or he was attempting to get a better look at Lewis Payne.

It also appears that David Herold's legs were kicking rather fiercely at the moment the photo was taken.

Very interesting, Crowza!

This is facinating stuff (I also love computer graphics and virtually LIVE in Photoshop!)

The man on the edge of the platform appears to be Captain Christian Rath. He was a definite friend and admirer of young Powell and totally in sympathy with Mrs. Surratt

RE: Execution Stereoviews - LincolnMan - 05-22-2014 06:22 PM

Christian Rath: born in Germany and died in Jackson, Michigan!

I thought Christian Rath was in full dress military uniform that day. The man with the overhanging foot does not appear to be- and would not then be Rath.

RE: Execution Stereoviews - L Verge - 05-22-2014 08:19 PM

I believe that the photographic enlargements and research done by John Elliott and Barry Cauchon several years ago concluded that Rath was the man in the white (what appears to be) duster.

RE: Execution Stereoviews - LincolnMan - 05-22-2014 08:29 PM

Really? That surprises me if true. Rath was an officer in the United States military. I wouldn't think that for such an important occasion and high profile event that he would be out of uniform.

I may be getting senile, and I don't have one of their booklets handy to double-check. Hopefully John will chime in.

Laurie,

Barry and John determined that Rath was NOT the man in white as was commonly believed. See attached picture.

My apologies. I told you senility was setting in. My mother, who knew nothing about computers, used to tell me my brain was on overload. I believe she was correct!

RE: Execution Stereoviews - BettyO - 05-22-2014 08:55 PM

The man in white is McCall, I think.....

We need John or Barry here.

Dave: the picture is blurry- so the man identified as Rath is not in uniform?
