I am confused about my 2 stereoviews showing Lincoln's home in Springfield draped in mourning.
The top stereoview, on the back, I can read "Lincolns Home" and below that, I think is says "May July." Is this correct?
In the bottom stereoview it reads"President Lincolns House/Springifleld Ill." And below that on the back "May 17 of 1866."
Comparing the 2 stereoviews, it appears that both were taken the same day. So, why the 2 different dates? Perhaps the second one the new owner wrote the day they bought it, but that seems unlikely. Any ideas?

I think he is, Jim. Lincoln's house is also draped for mourning. This page, with Old Bob dressed the same, states the photo was taken May 4, 1865.

I was assuming that the 1866 date on the second photo referred to the day that the owner of the stereocard visited Lincoln's home and/or purchased the card.

Are you certain it says "May July"? I think it's a sloppily written (and misspelled) "Springfield"---the lower case s's, n's, and e's are all the same compared to the "Lincolns Home" written in the first line, and the d at end of the line you're referring to is missing an upward stroke. That may not be unexpected, as the writer also didn't include an apostrophe in "Lincoln's."

Blaine's right. I didn't even think May July when I first read it. It just looked like Springfield to me. I moved on to the second one with the 1866 date.

The great part about stereo views, is that they can be combined to form a 3D image.
I've taken the liberty to combine these photos into two animated GIFs, which gives a sample of what the 3D image looks like without having to use 3D glasses.

Now that is cool. I own three stereo viwers myself. It has gotten hard to find Civil War cards for them. I don't have any of Lincoln.

I haven't purchased ANY Lincoln assassination-related ephemera in the past 20 years because I can't afford them anymore. I got lucky in 1985 when I went to an auction in downtown Manhattan at one of the major U.S. Auction houses. I had the winning bid of $60 for 5 stereo views; Two of Lincoln's home draped in mourning, One of the Lincoln vault that Lincoln was placed first, One of Lincoln's home not draped for mourning, and one of a Lincoln floral tribute. For $105 I also purchased a diary of a woman that lived in Washington City in 1865. Each date from April 14 to July 7 had an entry Lincoln-related- "The president was shot tonight." "President Lincoln died this morning." and right on through the Conspirators hung! In 1995 I lucked out on eBay and was high bid for a letter written by a sister, who lived in Washington City, to her brother in the Union Army. It was filled entirely with details about the assassination and dated Sunday, April 16, 1865. My high bid was $35.
