Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - Eagleeye1965 - 12-03-2013 08:05 AM I recently inherited what I hope is a beautiful collection of New York Herald newspapers, all in dated order starting from April 15th (2 different editions) and then every day afterwards up through May 10th 1865 They were found in a large wooden box, somewhat like a museum presentation box that would sit on a large podium I believe these are 100% genuine from 1865 as they show the letterheads coming up through the paper on most all of the newspapers Could you guys please tell me what you think about these? I will post one headline picture from each dated paper with the link to view an album of the entire newspaper under each picture (click on any photo to view full size)..took alot of great photographs so I hope this will be quite enjoyable for everyone https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952990748888702065?authkey=CI3BkrTE7bnsnwE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952989591592485521?authkey=CK-Oyv2-msCFHg https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952989148967938193?authkey=CN7O0Ped8MygrAE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952988458119896881?authkey=CKbMzIm25PrIngE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952987913545463937?authkey=COaajaHe5K3xuwE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952987155872362017?authkey=CNShnOKAm4j5GA https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952986501657561409?authkey=CKHJjavXnuDVXA https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952985951510445041?authkey=CKr7w6i_m4GuqQE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952985519748208113?authkey=COOV7-66m_nnsQE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952984907661614513?authkey=CKuTx_-r8IiygAE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952984379260627281?authkey=CP-nofC05PWJxwE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952983670386510081?authkey=CL6o7_2hkMri2wE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952982980350672577?authkey=COLXu9HwoKHvogE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952982432218394321?authkey=CLW89pyR-OCZJw https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952981917797596001?authkey=CLDt-_es5d38mwE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952977920421811745?authkey=CLqUzNWsmrHzQw https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952980547257687793?authkey=CPeuxpGF3bP-MA https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952974419842217393?authkey=CLah6szFoP79pwE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952973185396510529?authkey=COHJ34T5ssH7vQE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952972731797600577?authkey=CO_d66rC-vb6kAE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952972122509620769?authkey=CK2Et8H1jIOy4wE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952970434209033233?authkey=CI2p3p3jne2FYw https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952969677667255841?authkey=CIzAy_qOnILMcg https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952969273411052001?authkey=CNO6oNSY3eXnhgE https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952968420964194929?authkey=COCx-tK99MLRLg https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952967727573765489?authkey=COrPu8q_scG9KA https://plus.google.com/photos/116005268183168991550/albums/5952967046766310257?authkey=CIv39OiR5rrzcw RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - L Verge - 12-03-2013 09:20 AM You have a great collection of what appears to be original newspapers of the assassination period. Your family obviously was very interested in that history, and I hope that you appreciate the treasures that have been handed down to you. If you do decide to keep them, please consider proper conservation. RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - Eagleeye1965 - 12-03-2013 09:47 AM Thank you so much L.. Mostly my grandfather was deep into history and also had alot of Washington, Napolean and Teddy items in which most of we sold off a while back Had a wonderful Large Teddy Bear Hunt Hand Colored Engraving that I had wish we could have kept! We pretty much have decided to pass these papers along as were only able to keep a few of the paintings RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - Rhatkinson - 12-03-2013 11:41 AM Those are beautiful and I'm sure you are very proud. I have been collecting Lincoln assassination relics for 48 years now and have about 300 different Lincoln assassination newspapers - April 15 through July 8, 1865. While mostly Union, I have managed to obtain about a dozen Confederate. I also collect the 4/15/1865 New York Herald reprints. So far i have documented 53 different versions of reprints for this title. For an atlas showing about 30 different versions, go here: http://www.historybuff.com/newspapers/assassination Collector value for your archive ranges from $5,000-$8000 depending on which 2 editions your April 15 issues are: 2 AM, 3 AM are the most common. Rarest are 8:30 AM, 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM. The two 10:00 AM are the "inbetween" value. Rick thanks so very much for the information and wow that's a good long time to be collecting..perhaps in collecting papers you cant help but stop and read it all either so you must have a pretty darn good knowledge on Abe,,not so much the things everyone might know ..but its those little things that so many folks don't know about...that you have read about in the smaller print,, so much more in all of that little print it's incredible to be perfectly honest Value ..well what can I say but that sounds actually pretty good but would have figured perhaps more seeing they have been all collected already, in order like this, and not to mention the beautiful condition that most are in ..plus no more hunting for those issues ect..shoot some of these original issues I wonder if could ever be found anymore?? I love the one where the president proclaims his rewards amounts for the conspirators and then theres another favorite of mine already..where the guy is telling about how he was hired to build the car that will hold his casket..he goes on in INCREDIBLE detail..JUST LOVE THAT ONE AND WILL NEVER FORGET IT..I will try to post that section someday on here for everyone Here's the little piece I read about the Funeral Car and there is some amazing reading on each side of it RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - L Verge - 12-03-2013 04:42 PM Without reading each article, I can only warn you to not take everything as gospel truth. Reporters were still reporters back then and could pad a piece or get wrong information just as they do today. As for the value, I would tend to agree with Rick as to the lot price. I stopped collecting these newspapers years ago because they were just too cumbersome to preserve and store. We have also turned them down when offered to Surratt House Museum for the same reasons - and the fact that making originals available to researchers damages the newspapers unless handled carefully and with white gloves. Fortunately, many of these newspapers have been digitized today and are available online to researchers. I would think that this would diminish the value of the originals? RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - Eagleeye1965 - 12-03-2013 05:19 PM L makes sense but these I think are stored nicely like this and can be enjoyed right from it quite nice as well.. might give other collectors an idea to do something similar like this? Everything has been digitized today and in no way shape or form has it taken value from original items..maybe just the opposite as more folks will then desire the real deal I guess you could look at it like this....that's like having a Picasso print or a Genuine Picasso Painting or an Original Babe Ruth Rookie Card or a picture of the Original Babe Ruth rookie Card Even in the old Lincoln CDV photographs, the prized CDV is the one taken from Life (the original), not a photo taken of a photo..and all of his photograhs are digitized as well... Just seen one last night sell for over $5000.00..it was a Brady Beardless Abraham Lincoln! Everyone desires the original.. and I think that is true for most everything collectible RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - RJNorton - 12-03-2013 05:25 PM Just a quick note to John Fazio if he is reading this. John, did you notice in the one article Dave posted it says the Lincolns picked up Clara and Henry at the residence of Senator Harris? Have you seen that article before? Just curious - what do you think? RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - Matt Macoubrie - 12-03-2013 05:26 PM What a collection!!!! RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - Eagleeye1965 - 12-03-2013 05:40 PM I am so glad everyone is enjoying and thank you all for having me on board RE: Inherited 26 1865 New York Herald Lincoln Assassination Newspapers - L Verge - 12-03-2013 07:15 PM Eagleeye - Please call me Laurie (that's what the L stands for). Your newspapers are in excellent condition, and I suspect that is because they have been kept away from sunlight and air. Are they also contained within a ledger-type of book? Glued in? What? That book is offering them some protection also. However, after 35 years as a museum director and way too many classes and seminars in conservation, I can only beg you to get them out of that wooden box and into acid-free, archival storage boxes. Wood can be very detrimental to many items, especially paper. If you intend to sell them in the near future, I guess it's not your concern; but they really should be better protected.
