I saw this on line and thought I'd share it. It is said by some to be the single best newspaper column ever written. It certainly is the best one I have ever read:

Great story! Walking into the history of this country. A great phrase like "now he belongs to the ages."

Thanks for posting the links for those articles. After reading them, I have a greater appreciation for Stanton and the incredible burden he must have been under at the time. He had to deal with a real conspiracy, and did not have Seward to help him.
