Proving this kind of thing must be fun, when it's real. I wish they had shown the other known picture of Billy the Kid for comparison purposes.
Based only on this article, I'm doubtful.

It's interesting that the tintype was in the Pat Garrett estate. Gene, you don't think it is Billy?

The other, well known photo of Billy went for auction in 2011 for $2.3 million.
Let's just say I'm just skeptical.

So Billy got killed at 22 years of age? How old was Kris Kristopherson was he played the role as Billy?

RE: Billy the Kid photo? - Gene C - 08-29-2013 07:07 PM

Kris was about 34,

Yeah, that sounds right. He had a baby face-was too old for an accurate portrayal. Great movie, by the way-the Director's Cut.

I would love it to be a picture of the kid. If I remember correctly, "Uncle Pat"'s widow, Apolinaria sold the pistol used in the shooting of the kid, numerous times.

Zerelda James did the same with "Jesse's gun".....

RE: Billy the Kid photo? - Jim Garrett - 08-30-2013 06:50 AM

I imagine the economic situations for both Zerelda and Apolinaria were comparable. It was a tough environment for widows, just look at what Mary Todd Lincoln had to go through to get any settlement for her murdered husband. Zerelda and Apolinaria had to get by on their husbands respective fame or notoriety. I don't think their was much to Pat Garrett's or Jesse James estates when each were murdered. Both women were resourceful.

I will not allow myself to get caught up in the Kennedy assassination, but what was/is the economic situation of Marina Oswald?

RE: Billy the Kid photo? - J. Beckert - 08-30-2013 10:08 AM

It should be getting better. She just put the wedding band LHO left on their dresser the day of the assassination up for auction.

RE: Billy the Kid photo? - Gene C - 08-30-2013 10:11 AM

Good timing. 50th anniversary of the assassination. She' got to be in her mid 70's?

RE: Billy the Kid photo? - J. Beckert - 08-30-2013 11:40 AM

72. We've talked about Edwin Booth bearing the shame of his brother's act. Put yourself in her shoes. Or their children's. That's a heck of a cloud to be under.
