Thanks, Betty. Jerry Madonna talks about Bingham's deathbed statement on p. 377 of his book A Threat to the Republic. Just as Bingham was about to reveal to his doctor what Mary Surratt had told him in 1865, he is said to have changed his mind and declares, "The truth must remain sealed." It sort of sounds like this new novel is based on the secrets Bingham allegedly learned from Mary. I don't know about the validity of Bingham's deathbed statement. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Y'all may have already seen this, but it's looks interesting. It is fictionalized, but it involves a "secret" that John Bingham apparently took to his grave concerning a conspiracy to kill Lincoln. Does anyone have any information on Bingham's deathbed "confession"?

[From reading the preview pages of the book on amazon, it appears the confession was indeed a real event (at least according to Bingham's descendants) and that, while he never revealed what it was, it involved Mary Surratt telling Bingham something "terrible" on the day that her sentence was published. I can only imagine that it involved a much broader conspiracy, which most certainly seems to have been the case as Mr. Hall detailed in "Come Retribution".]

We've already posted this under "Books" -- looks like it might be interesting as far as novels go....
