This sort of thing frequently happens: someone says something and it becomes Gospel and is followed mindlessly by a long train of secondary authority. The business about Herold accompanying Powell is another such myth. As is the business about "kidnapping". Stop and think about it for a minute, objectively: Do we really believe that Davis, Benjamin, Seddon, Breckenridge, Thompson, Cleary, Clay, Holcombe, Tucker, Sanders, Martin, all the other Canadian Cabinet members and all the other politically and militarily savvy Confederate leaders, listened to a harebrained, madcap scheme about kidnapping the President and holding him for something that was already being done, since January, 1865, namely prisoner exchange, from a 26-year old actor who knew nothing of politics or military science, and said: "Wow. What a great idea, John. Go for it!. I wonder why we didn't think of that." Actually John, that doesn't sound any more harebrained than some of the other stupid things the government does ( like Fast and Furious) It could have gone down like this: John, you go ahead and kidnap Lincoln, and we'll support you along our courier route and with Mosby's troops. Of coarse, like the Mission Impossible Team, should you or any member of your team be caught, we will deny all knowledge of your activities. (We may even decide once you get started, to withdraw all military aid, like we did in the 61-62' Bay of Pigs/Cuban Crisis) And should Lincoln get killed during the kidnapping attempt, that would just be too bad. (But I agree with you....) RE: DC Sites - KateH. - 05-13-2013 04:19 PM Betty, Here is the photo I took of the signature. RE: DC Sites - RJNorton - 05-13-2013 04:43 PM On archive.org I found this signature. RE: DC Sites - BettyO - 05-13-2013 05:47 PM Kate - Roger - Looks genuine to me! Thanks a bunch! Sarah Slater's father died in Raleigh on 13 Nov. 1861. I have not been able to get confirmation of that. Can you check in with the people there and see if you can find a Death Certificate? Obviously, I will cover your expenses. PLEZZ!!! If this is a real thing I'd be happy to check on it when I get a chance, though I'm no researcher and I have absolutely no idea where to go or who to ask about such a thing. He found Jimmy Hoffa, but won't tell anyone.....even me. RE: DC Sites - John Stanton - 05-14-2013 07:36 PM (05-14-2013 07:31 AM)jonathan Wrote:(05-12-2013 05:29 PM)John Stanton Wrote: PS. I found his wife's application for a pension, and it gave his death at Raleigh. I have been told that in that era the death records were kept at the County level. So, I suggest that the Clerk of the Courts would be a starting point, and he would guide you beyond that. Just finding that bit of info was a Major break through in my effort to find Sarah. Please try. RE: DC Sites - jonathan - 05-14-2013 10:03 PM (05-14-2013 07:36 PM)John Stanton Wrote:(05-14-2013 07:31 AM)jonathan Wrote:(05-12-2013 05:29 PM)John Stanton Wrote: PS. Can't make any promises about how long it might take though, to say I'm a novice at this kind of thing is to give me far too much credit. RE: DC Sites - Seward - 05-20-2013 03:01 PM Yes, they took Henry to Ira's house on 15th and H. I don't believe Henry owned the house on the Square in 1865. RE: DC Sites - scldrgnfly - 05-22-2013 07:04 PM John, did I miss Sarah Slater's father's name? I live relatively near Raleigh, but also, our local library has a genealogy research aid and she might be able to help find the death certificate, if the records still exist? Also, was she Catholic? I could check with the Diocese in Raleigh. Wasn't our Cardinal Gibbons--Bishop James Gibbons when he came to Wilmington, NC, a Priest or Bishop by that time at the church Mary Surratt used to go to in Washington, DC? I thought I had heard that. If I had her father's name, I could check for you, too, if Jonathon needs help finding it. |
