RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-02-2017 04:07 PM Good guess, Blaine, but it's not Greene. Hint #3: There is one specific reason why this man is mentioned in more than just the New Salem books. He has been mentioned before on this forum. RE: Who is this person? - Steve - 09-02-2017 05:12 PM Denton Offut? RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-02-2017 05:30 PM Good try, Steve, but it's not Offutt. RE: Who is this person? - Steve - 09-02-2017 07:12 PM The man in the photo resembles the photo of John Roll that appeared in Ida Tarbell's McClure's articles about Lincoln's early life (without the large chin beard): https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=31201086 RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-03-2017 03:52 AM I am sorry, Steve, but it's not John Roll. RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 09-03-2017 08:03 AM Does the name occur here? http://learningabe.info/newsalemmap.gif RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-03-2017 08:15 AM Eva, his name is not there. Although he knew many of the folks in New Salem, he did not live in the town itself. He lived nearby. RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 09-03-2017 12:36 PM Bowling Green? RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-03-2017 12:42 PM Good try, Eva, but it's not Bowling Green. Hint #4: According to this man, the last conversation he had with Abraham Lincoln was during the time period when Lincoln was President-elect. What Lincoln told him is included in some Lincoln biographies (including David Herbert Donald's). RE: Who is this person? - J. Beckert - 09-03-2017 02:16 PM Once again, you are the Trivia King, Roger. RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-03-2017 02:29 PM It's really not that hard, Joe. The folks who have followed one particular topic (which has been thoroughly discussed on this forum), will recognize the name once someone correctly answers the question. RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-03-2017 02:49 PM Hint #5: The topic I referred to in my previous post is located in the "Abraham Lincoln before his Presidency" section of the forum. RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 09-04-2017 02:57 AM (I checked Donald twice but still no clue who'd match all hints.) RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 09-04-2017 03:57 AM It is mentioned in Donald's book. However, it is not mentioned in the section that deals with the period when Lincoln was President-elect. It is mentioned when Donald discusses the one particular topic I mentioned previously. This particular topic deals with something that happened much earlier in Lincoln's life than when he was President-elect. The man who is the answer to the trivia question had something to say about this topic. RE: Who is this person? - Steve - 09-04-2017 05:00 AM Isaac Cogdal |
