RE: Who is this person? - L Verge - 11-07-2014 09:48 AM He also had an account with Galt Jewelers here in D.C. Lucky Mary indeed. RE: Who is this person? - Anita - 12-08-2014 08:42 PM Who are these ladies or rather what was their occupation during the Civil War? [attachment=1249] [attachment=1250] RE: Who is this person? - BettyO - 12-08-2014 08:56 PM These ladies are Vivandières a French name for women attached to military regiments. Ladies served in the Crimean War and also in our Civil War; providing water and aid to soldiers. RE: Who is this person? - Anita - 12-08-2014 10:35 PM Wow, that was fast Betty. The term Vivandières and their long history serving military regiments is new to me. Betty your prize is a ticket to Donizetti's "La fille du régiment". For origins & history go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivandi%C3%A8re RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 12-29-2014 08:45 AM This person has been mentioned many times on the forum. Who is he? That snozz says William Seward to me... RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 12-29-2014 10:01 AM ...would be my guess, too! RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 12-29-2014 10:21 AM Kudos to Dave and Eva - you are both correct. I actually thought this one might last awhile. You both win a free, 21 day trip to Alaska! RE: Who is this person? - LincolnToddFan - 12-29-2014 05:22 PM Excellent guess work guys...I have never seen that photo of Seward before, would never have guessed it was him. RE: Who is this person? - STS Lincolnite - 12-29-2014 05:30 PM That photo was new to me as well. Any idea what year it was taken? RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 12-29-2014 05:54 PM According to Wiki in 1851: http://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Seward_1851.png#mw-jump-to-license The file history reads it was first published in "McClure's Magazine'', November 1906, p. 16. I wouldn't have recognized him either, Toia, because of the steely look in his eyes. In fact, that photo reminds me of some photos I've seen of Lincoln. Most of the photos that we see of Seward show him with a more genial expression. Thank you (my aging eyes suddenly feel younger). I really thought the question would last longer than it did. RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 12-30-2014 08:26 AM If you had only posted the eye that would most likely have worked out...the nose was just too striking (unveiling)! |
