RE: Who is this person? - L Verge - 10-18-2014 06:06 PM To whom was this reporter referring when he wrote, "...but this remarkable woman came closer to being a queen than any American woman has"? RE: Who is this person? - Anita - 10-18-2014 06:40 PM Kate Chase. I've been waiting for John Oller's book "American Queen". It should be available the end of the month. Thanks for the reminder. A wooden slab was placed on his grave which said "The Teacher of Abraham Lincoln." His remains lay there for nearly a half century. In 1933 his granddaughter, Mary (who was a teacher herself), had the remains returned to Illinois. Joe Di Cola posted a photo of his gravestone yesterday. Roger, you don't happen to know the name of the cemetery do you? Strangely enough, I drove through Blunt (not much to drive through) this past spring on my way to Pierre, SD to do some research at the state archives. I anticipate going through again sometime in the future and would make a quick stop to see the place. Thanks! Sorry to bother you with such a minor detail request. RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 10-19-2014 11:25 AM Scott, I do not know, but possibly if you contacted the folks at the Mentor Graham Home they could help. http://www.travelsd.com/Newsroom/Detail?id=90502 http://sr009.k12.sd.us/historic.htm RE: Who is this person? - STS Lincolnite - 10-19-2014 11:36 AM (10-19-2014 11:25 AM)RJNorton Wrote: Scott, I do not know, but possibly if you contacted the folks at the Mentor Graham Home they could help. Just after the Prologue and the first chapter, I may have to change my negative opinion of Kate. Right now, I'm noticing similarities between her and Mrs. Lincoln in their early years. Maybe that's the reason for the mutual dislike -- they each saw themselves in the other person. You make a good point when you say "Maybe that's the reason for the mutual dislike -- they each saw themselves in the other person." More after I do some reading. RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 10-19-2014 05:35 PM "Maybe that's the reason for the mutual dislike -- they each saw themselves in the other person." would make perfect sense as that's so often the way it is. And one was in the advantage of position while the other was in advantage of "youth". RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 10-22-2014 09:02 AM Who is this gentleman? [attachment=1076] RE: Who is this person? - Gene C - 10-22-2014 09:41 AM William Sprague? RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 10-22-2014 01:44 PM Brilliant guess, Gene, but it's not William Sprague. Hint #1: Both Abraham and Mary Lincoln dealt with this gentleman. Hint #2: His name is well-known! I very much apologize for erroneously posting a photo of the sought-after gentleman's son due to a misleading caption. This is (guaranteed) the correct likeness. I was delighted to discover one (strangely only on...) "younger image", thus the mistake...anyway, the hints might even be correct for father and son (hint #2 definitely!!!). Sorry again! [attachment=1077] RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 10-22-2014 03:11 PM Hint #3: Go shopping! RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 10-22-2014 03:20 PM Montgomery Ward? RE: Who is this person? - Eva Elisabeth - 10-22-2014 03:36 PM This is an outstanding guess, Roger, but, I'm sorry, not correct. It might be the other way round in the USA, but I believe worldwide the name of the gentleman whose customers the Lincolns were is better known than the name Montgomery Ward. RE: Who is this person? - STS Lincolnite - 10-22-2014 03:47 PM How about J.C. Penney? (10-22-2014 03:47 PM)STS Lincolnite Wrote: How about J.C. Penney? OK. That was a bad guess. I just looked up J.C. Penney and he wasn't even born until 1875. Got caught up in the department store named after a person idea. I will have to try again! One more department store guess. Is it R.H. Macy? |
