For Memorial Day this year, I wrote a little piece about Joyce Kilmer, author of the (formerly?) famous poem "Trees". For those who don't know, Sgt. Kilmer was killed in action during the Second Battle of the Marne, and he had continued to write poetry even during his service in France.

I waited until today (Memorial Day) to purchase discounted appliances at a major store which will go unnamed because I am a veteran. I got a great discount. The cashier told me that the store had received flak for giving discounts to veterans. Are we in trouble folks as a nation- or what?
